Poker Tournaments are great for amateur players, professionals and anything in between. One awesome hit can lead to lifechanging money and fame, especially during famous poker series.
Poker Tournaments are always played for tournament chips and the prize is based on when a player is eliminated, or if they win the tournament. The better the position the bigger the prize. Also the blinds/antes are periodically increased so that is compensates for the eliminated players.

Poker Tournament - Sit and Go
Sit and Go (SNG) tournaments are played with a predetermined number of players. Once that number of players are registered to that tournament, it instantly starts. Since the number of players is fixed, the prizepool is also fixed.
The most played are single-table tournaments for 6 or 9 players, but you can also play Heads-Up SNGs or multitable SNGs. These can be for 18, 45 or even 180 players. The only real differences from Multi-Table tournaments is that there is no fixed starting time, but there is a fixed number of players.
Poker Tournament - Multi-Table Tournaments
Multi-Table Tournaments are tournaments with a fixed starting time and for an unlimited number of players. The more players register and pay the buy-in, the bigger the prizepool. There is almost always a guaranteed prizepool, which the poker room will pay out even if there are not enough entries. If there is an overlay in a prizepool, the poker room pays for it.
MTTs can be attended by an unlimited number of players. Whoever wants to play, can play, as long as they pay the buy-in.
MTTs are a source of huge prizes both online and in Live tournaments. One huge hit can change your life and these are the type of tournaments with multimillion prizes.
Lottery SNG Tournaments (Spin & Go, Sit & Go HERO)
This is the newest type of tournaments that combines a little bit of gambling with standard poker play. The tournaments are started off with a spin determining the prizepool. After that, players join a SNG tournaments for 3 (PokerStars) or 4 (Party Poker) players and the winner takes all.
The prizepool can be smaller than the combined buy-ins, but also a lot bigger. There can be promotions which feature huge prizepools and some players have won even $1 million in a single Spin & Go.
A Little Poker Tournament Dictionary
- Freezout - Only one buy-in for a tournaments is possible
- Rebuy - If a player is eliminated from a tournament, they can again pay for their buy-in and join the tournament again. The Rebuy period is predetermined and
- Re-Entry - Almost the same as Rebuy, except when a player pays the buy-in again, they are moved to another table
- Knockout - Prizes are awarded for each eliminated player on top of the standard prizepool
